Spiritual Roots Community Food Bank is a Feeding America Southwest Virginia Agent located behind DP NRV. It was started by Addison and Beverly Taylor in 2002 as a soup kitchen. With many trials, triumphs and bridged relationships the food bank has grown into a large entity salvaging food from local grocery stores, merchants, farmers market and even the YMCA gardening community known as Neighborhood Harvest and distributing to people in need in Montgomery, Floyd, Giles, and Craig counties as well as Christiansburg Blacksburg and Radford.
The food bank is 100% volunteer operated and benefits greatly from university students volunteering with the VT Engage initiative through food collections at major athletic events, competitions between peers/groups, local food drives, door-to-door campaigns, etc.
In 2008. when the changes in the economy began to reflect greatly in the increased need among food banks nationwide, we began to see the favor of the Lord come upon the Food Bank. We were granted so much food salvage we began supplying four other food banks multiple times each month with bread, sweets, fruits/vegetables and meat. It seems the more we give away the more He brings into the house – God is awesome!
The Food Bank is one of the few food banks in the NRV where you are not required to prove your need and may return once a month on the honor system. It is also one of the only food banks who assist the client in selecting staples (client-choice) instead of pre-boxed staples. This was implemented to avoid clients receiving unwanted food that is discarded after they leave the food bank.
If you would like to help or contribute in anyway please contact church office: email@example.com. Though Spiritual Roots’ Food Bank oversight is through Dwelling Place, we also are actively seeking participation from other Christian churches and ministries to broaden our ability to better serve the community.
